I like that phrase “early beginnings”. Having followed strip reprints through Ed Aprill, Woody
Gelman, Fantagraphics and NBM, I found starting at Day One was best. For instance, in the first volume of NBM’s WASH TUBBS, one can see that the young Roy Crane slowly began to realize that gag-a-day was a trap, and the strip took on an inspired energy once he had Wash hit the road in continuing adventures. Crane’s struggle to find his way makes volume one as fascinating as his later productive peaks.
